Locals describe Mochignano as due passi (two steps) from the mountains and from the sea. Both are within easy reach, if you want to venture away from the house and the valley.

On the coast there are villages in the Bay of Poets, such as Lerici, Tellaro and Portovenere; and Riviera towns such as Viarreggio.

The Cinque Terre are five lovely isolated seaside villages that you can get to easily by train from Villafranca or by boat from La Spezia.

The mountains are full of lakes which are gloriously cool on the hottest of summer days.

On foot within an hour you can get to Bagnonethe long way,  going over the stream, up the hillside and along to the castle - or, if you're feeling energetic, up by Pastina, perched high on the hill. Alternatively, there's a good walk down through the Mulini di Marzo - a track through the woods ending in renovated mill buildings overlooking the river, with bathing  pools on the way into town.
